Service Description:  Included Ophthalmology (eye doctor), orthoptists (vision testing and eye movement).  Optometrists (assess the need for glasses). Diagnose and manage all eye conditions in childhood.  Age range: RHC  0 -16 years old, others all ages.  Access to service: referral from health professionals.  Funding: NHS service - free to children and young people.

Access to Service: Health, education and social work visual impairment professionals.

Funding:  Initially funded through review of community eye care services funding. Free to children.

Service description: Assessment of need for low vision aids and provision of appropriate aids identified.  This includes various types of magnifiers for near vision and uniocular aids for distance vision. Age range: All ages Access to service: Referrals from Health professionals and VI Teachers. Funding: NHS service – free to children and young people but service does not provide large pieces of equipment e.g. CCTV but advice regarding these may be provided

Service description:  Initial health and developmental assessment of children diagnosed with VI.  Advise to parents and identification of initial services required.  Age Range:  All ages 0-19.  Access tp service:  Consultant ophthalmologists from Yorkhill hospital.  Funding:  NHS service - free to children and young people (this service will shortly be expanded to cover referral from all hospitals acress GGC.

Service Description:  The aim of the service is to advise parents, support children and help them to achieve their potential in the pre-school, primary and secondary years.  The nature and frequency of support varies depending on the needs of the child.  Provision of advice to support may take the form of adequate materials, equipment, and adaptation of teaching programmes and style.  Advice on the geographical layout and organisation within education (and the home for preschool children) is given.  Guidance on the use of specialist equipment e.g. LVA, CCTV, specialist software is given in addition to provision of materials in Braille or Moon if required.  Support is given to class teachers in the form of inservice training.

Age Range: 0-19yrs

Access to Service: Open access

Funding: Provided to all East Dunbartonshire residents and those children attending schools run by East Dunbartonshire Council.  East Dunbartonshire also funds placements at specialist VI schools/units elsewhere for those pupils where this is deemed necessary.

Funding:  Social work services are available to all East Dunbartonshire residents.  Some pieces of equipment may not be able to be funded directly.

Habilitation/Mobilty:  A mobility and independence service is available to adults only and therefore can be accessed from age 16 years by contacting Social Work Childrens Disabilities Team.  For children this may be available via a purchasing agreement.
