Service description:  Multidisciplinary assessment, diagnosis and treatment of children with suspected or confirmed developmental difficulty or disability. This includes assessment by a paediatrician, all of whom have some training in visual impairment. Age Range:  0 – 19 years. Access:  Open access, anyone can access this service. Funding:  NHS service – free to children

Service description: Includes Ophthalmology (eye doctor), orthoptists (vision testing and eye movement), optometrists (assess the need for glasses).  Diagnose and manage all eye conditions in childhood.  Age range: RHC - 0-13 years old, Other: All ages.  Access to service: Referral from Health Professionals.  Funding:  NHS service - free to children and young people.

Service desription: Support to families of children with visual impairment - provision of information, provision of links to professionals and other families, help with play and communication.  Age range:  All ages (0-19) for mainly preschool.  Access: Health Professionals and VI professionals.  Funding:  NHS Service - free to children.

Service description:  Assessment of need for low vision aids and provision of appropriate aids identified.  This includes various types of magnifiers for near vision and uniocular aids for distance vision. Age range:  All ages: Access to service:  Referrals from Health professionals.  Funding:  NHS service – free to children and young people but service does not provide large pieces of equipment e.g. CCTV but advice regarding these may be provided

Service Description: Initial health and development assessment of children diagnosed with VI.  Advice to parents and identification of initial services required.  Age Range: All ages (0-19 years old)  Access to service;  Consultant ophthalmologists from Yorkhill Hospital.  Funding:  NHS services - free to children and young people (this service will shortly be expanded to cover referral from all hospitals across GGC)

 

Education 

Peripatetic Teaching Service - Renfrewshire         

Service Description:  Educational support for children with a visual impairment by a VI Teacher to allow access to education and the curriculum.  Provision of advice to pupils, parents and schools on the needs of these children in terms of adapted materials, equipment and adaptation of teaching  programmes and styles.  Advice on the geographical layout and organisation within education (and the home for preschool children). Advise on the use of specialist equipment eg LVAs, CCTV, specialist software and provision of materials in Braille and Moon.

Funding:  Provided to all Renfrewshire residents and those children attending schools run by Renfrewshire Council.  Renfrewshire also funds placements at specialist VI schools/units elsewhere for those pupils where this is deemed necessary.
